Taxi Travel Safety

Traveling outside your hometown can be unsettling when everything is unfamiliar. Don’t make taxi usage one of your concerns—here are some basic safety tips when you are away from home:

  • Ask the airport information desk, hotel information, restaurant hosts, etc. for local cab companies they recommend
  • Call for a taxi when possible instead of flagging one down. This will not only make sure you get the taxi company you want, but also lost property can be traced if the cab was dispatched.
  • When in doubt, use a cab company with a name you know.
  • Before you get into the cab, check for vehicle numbers posted on the rear and front of the vehicle. Legitimate cabs will follow local regulations for marking the vehicles.
  • Look for color schemes—legitimate companies will have their vehicles painted with the exact same paint colors from cab to cab.
  • Check for a photo ID displayed in the front of the car—often on the visor in the passenger seat.
  • Look for a meter installed in the front of the car.
